A glossary of Sauvage Eau de Parfum’s notes

Calabrian bergamot (top)

What it is: Bergamot is a citrus fruit whose essential oil is pressed from the peel; the Calabria region of southern Italy is known for growing it.

In this fragrance: Dior describes it as bright, fresh and citrusy, and places it in the opening.

Sichuan pepper (heart)

What it is: The husks of a shrub’s fruit that grows in China and is named after Sichuan province; botanically it is not related to black pepper.

In this fragrance: Dior places it at the heart with lavender and star anise.

Lavender (heart)

What it is: An aromatic plant whose flowers are distilled for their oil, well known in classic men’s fragrances.

In this fragrance: At the heart between Sichuan pepper and star anise, as Dior lists it.

Star anise (heart)

What it is: The star-shaped fruit of an evergreen tree, with a scent close to that of aniseed.

In this fragrance: The third note at the heart, as Dior lists it.

Papua New Guinean vanilla extract (base)

What it is: Vanilla comes from the pods of an orchid, cured after harvest to develop their scent, and grown in places including Papua New Guinea.

In this fragrance: Dior names its extract in the base and makes citrus and vanilla the headline of the scent.

Ambroxan (base)

What it is: A fragrance material made to give a scent close to that of ambergris.

In this fragrance: With the vanilla extract in the base, as Dior lists it.

Patchouli

What it is: The leaves of a tropical plant, distilled into an earthy, woody oil.

In this fragrance: Dior mentions “woody patchouli” in its description without placing it in a layer.

Sauvage Eau de Parfum: the idea as Dior tells it

Dior says the inspiration for Sauvage Eau de Parfum came from the desert at the magical hour of twilight, and presents it as a fragrant interpretation of a moment tinted with a thick blue.
