What do the two have in common?
- Concentration: each description gives the type as Parfum, so this is a like-for-like comparison.
- A woody base: the Code Parfum description places it in the woody family, and the Acqua di Giò Parfum description in the woody aromatic family.
- Bergamot: a note they share, and the Code Parfum description makes it the opening.
Where do they differ?
The other notes. After the bergamot opening, the Code Parfum description has it “developing through a heart of clary sage and orris butter, and settling into a warm base of tonka bean and cedar”, and calls it “a modern classic with understated sophistication”. Acqua di Giò Parfum combines bergamot with rosemary essence and incense notes, “for a deep and intense finish”. The first description lists five notes, the second three.
The marine character is not in the Parfum. In our store, the Acqua di Gio Eau de Parfum description places that fragrance in the marine family, while the Acqua di Giò Parfum description mentions no marine note and places it in the woody aromatic family. So this is a comparison of two woody fragrances, not of a woody one against a marine one.

The Code line has three types: Eau de Toilette, Parfum and Elixir. The Eau de Toilette also differs from the Parfum in its notes: its description lists mandarin and lavender instead of bergamot, clary sage and orris butter, while keeping tonka bean and cedar. In the Acqua di Giò line the character changes from version to version: the Eau de Parfum is marine, the Parfum woody aromatic, the Elixir has violet and leather with a marine note, and the Absolu has patchouli, aquatic notes and woods.
