Are Perfume Testers Genuine? What Tester Sellers in Kuwait Don’t Tell You

Last updated: 16 October 2026

“100% genuine tester at half price”, available every week, and for perfumes from exclusive collections: an offer seen again and again in Kuwait. Judging it does not take an expert; it is enough to know how many testers actually reach authorised points of sale, and where they go.

The short answer: a genuine tester is a demonstration bottle that the brand supplies to authorised points of sale in very limited numbers. It is used up on the testing shelf, and often there are not even enough for the point of sale itself. That is why a “tester” offered for sale in constantly renewed quantities, for many perfumes and without ever running out, is in most cases not genuine, however strongly the seller insists it is.

The journey of a genuine tester: from the brand to the testing shelf

  1. The brand sends each authorised point of sale a small number of demonstration bottles of each perfume, from time to time.
  2. They are placed on the testing shelf, usually in a plain box or no box at all, marked “Tester” or “Not for sale”.
  3. Customers try them day after day until they are empty.
  4. They often run out before the next delivery, so there are not even enough for the point of sale itself.

The result: genuine testers are never left over at the point of sale to be sold.

The arithmetic that exposes “testers” offered for sale

If an authorised point of sale barely has enough testers for its own customers, where does a seller get testers of the same perfume available every week, without ever running out, for dozens of perfumes from different brands?

A common example: a well-known perfume from an exclusive collection whose tester is always available from a seller who insists it is genuine, while the authorised point of sale for that perfume receives only a few demonstration bottles, which its own customers use up on the shelf. A supply that never runs out does not match the nature of a genuine tester, and that is the clearest sign that what is on offer is in most cases fake.

6 signs of a non-genuine “tester” before buying

  1. Always available, never runs out: the same perfume is back in stock week after week.
  2. Testers of dozens of perfumes: from different brands in a single shop.
  3. Testers from exclusive collections: perfumes sold at only a few points of sale in the first place.
  4. A source with no name: the seller does not name where it came from, or only says “stock from a closed shop” or “through someone in a store”.
  5. No invoice and no warranty: no agent warranty and no returns.
  6. A price far below the full genuine bottle, with a promise that it is “the same perfume”.

One sign is enough to ask questions; more than one usually means that what is on offer is not genuine.

A genuine tester versus a “tester” offered for sale

“I only have one tester of each perfume”

This is the most common answer when a seller is asked about quantity, but it does not change the arithmetic. What matters is not the number of bottles per perfume but the total and how often it is restocked: one or two bottles of each perfume, in a shop offering dozens of perfumes and restocked week after week, add up to quantities that cannot come from the testing shelves of authorised points of sale.

Exclusive collections: genuine testers are even rarer

Many major houses have exclusive collections released at fewer points of sale than their regular perfumes, some only in the brand’s boutiques and selected counters. These collections include:

  • Chanel: Les Exclusifs de Chanel.
  • Dior: La Collection Privée Christian Dior; details in our guide to Dior’s exclusive collection.
  • Armani: Armani Privé.
  • Gucci: The Alchemist’s Garden.
  • Bvlgari: Le Gemme; details in our guide to Le Gemme.
  • Dolce & Gabbana: the Velvet collection.
  • Carolina Herrera: Herrera Confidential.
  • Guerlain: L’Art & La Matière.
  • Saint Laurent: Le Vestiaire des Parfums.
  • Van Cleef & Arpels: Collection Extraordinaire.
  • Cartier: Les Heures de Parfum.

Fewer points of sale mean fewer demonstration bottles. If testers of regular perfumes are limited, testers from these collections are rarer still, and a “tester” from them that is always available for sale is in most cases not genuine.

Common arguments when selling testers, and the answers

  • “A genuine tester, just without a box”: a missing box does not make a bottle genuine; it makes it harder to check, and it does not answer the question of where this quantity came from.
  • “Cheaper because it is a tester”: a low price does not prove authenticity, and genuine testers are not meant to be sold at all.
  • “I only have one”: what matters is the total on offer and how often it is restocked, not the count per perfume.
  • “From a closed shop’s stock” or “through someone in a store”: this does not explain the same tester being available week after week, and it comes with no agent warranty.

What does buying a non-genuine “tester” cost?

  • The full amount: usually no invoice, no warranty and no returns.
  • Scent and longevity: nothing guarantees they match the genuine perfume.
  • Unknown ingredients: their source and compliance with the brand’s standards cannot be known, and they go straight onto the skin.
  • Gifting: a bottle with no box and no invoice does not make a fitting gift.

How to check a “tester” before buying

  1. The key question: how is this tester always available from the seller when authorised points of sale themselves receive only a few bottles?
  2. Ask for the name of the party the product came from.
  3. Ask for an invoice or a document that can be verified, bearing in mind that an invoice alone does not prove authenticity.
  4. Do not rely on the barcode, the packaging or the price as proof of authenticity.

The safe alternative: the genuine boxed bottle, in installments

The price gap that makes testers tempting shrinks a lot with installments: a full bottle in its sealed box with its invoice, from a seller who states where the goods come from and their warranty, paid in installments with Deema or Taly. In our store: 100% genuine products with agent warranty, boxed, and delivered with the invoice. For buying online: how to tell that a perfume is genuine.

Frequently asked questions about testers

Are testers genuine?

Genuine testers exist, but they are intended for trying at the authorised point of sale and their numbers are very limited. A “tester” offered for sale in constantly renewed quantities is in most cases not genuine.

How many testers reach a point of sale?

A few bottles of each perfume from time to time, which customers use up on the testing shelf, and often not even enough for the point of sale itself.

How can a non-genuine tester be recognised?

The clearest signs are a tester that is always available and never runs out, for many perfumes or from exclusive collections, with no known source, no invoice and no warranty.

Why are testers sold at a lower price?

Sellers often present them as a “trial version”. A lower price does not indicate authenticity, and genuine testers are not meant to be sold at all.

The seller has only one tester of each perfume; is it genuine?

That is not enough. If the seller offers testers of many perfumes that are always in stock, that quantity cannot come from testing shelves, and what is on offer is in most cases not genuine.

Are there genuine testers of Chanel’s and Dior’s exclusive perfumes?

They exist at the authorised points of sale, in smaller numbers than for regular perfumes. That is why testers from these collections that are always available for sale are in most cases not genuine.

Do you sell testers?

The perfumes in our store are full bottles in their boxes; we do not sell demonstration bottles.
