Chanel Coco: Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum? And How It Differs from Coco Noir and Mademoiselle

Short answer: Three Chanel perfumes start with the word Coco, and each has a different personality: Coco is a warm, spicy amber floral with jasmine, Coco Noir is a modern amber with rose and patchouli, and Coco Mademoiselle is another line, lighter and fresher. Three names that start with Coco
Asking for “Coco Chanel” without the rest of the name can lead to the wrong perfume, because the word is shared by three fragrances:
- Coco: the oldest of the three, a spicy amber floral built on jasmine, ylang-ylang and patchouli.
- Coco Noir: another perfume with its own formula, described by Chanel as a modern amber: bergamot, then rose and rose geranium leaf, over patchouli and tonka bean.

What does “amber” mean in Coco?
An amber perfume, once called oriental, is built on warmth: resins, vanilla, spices and woods that stay long on the skin. In Coco, that warmth comes from Indonesian patchouli and, in the Eau de Parfum, from benzoin, a balsamic resin whose scent is close to vanilla. Above this base stand jasmine and ylang-ylang from the Comoros, so the perfume comes out rich and floral rather than simply sweet.
Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum?
The difference is not only intensity, because the Eau de Parfum adds notes that are not in the Eau de Toilette:
- CHANEL Coco Eau de Toilette for Women: mandarin, then jasmine absolute and ylang-ylang, over patchouli. Chanel describes it as a lighter interpretation that keeps the perfume’s richness, and it is the better fit for daytime.
- CHANEL Coco Eau de Parfum for Women: Sicilian mandarin, then jasmine, ylang-ylang and Tunisian orange blossom, over patchouli, tonka and benzoin. Chanel describes it as a rich amber symphony, so it is warmer, sweeter and better for evenings.

Does Coco suit Kuwait’s heat?
It is a warm, dense perfume, and heat increases its projection, so one spray is enough in the daytime, and it shows at its best in the evening and the cooler months. For daytime, the Eau de Toilette is the choice.
How can the perfume be identified from the box?
COCO is written with the concentration: EAU DE TOILETTE or EAU DE PARFUM. COCO NOIR is Coco Noir, and COCO MADEMOISELLE is a perfume from another line.
