- N°5 Eau de Toilette: Chanel describes it as a powerful, textured abstract floral with a woody facet: a bouquet of rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang elevated by aldehydes, with sandalwood and vetiver adding depth. The House says it appeared in 1924 as an interpretation with woodier notes.
- N°5 Eau de Parfum: Chanel calls it the House’s iconic floral aldehyde: a bouquet around May rose and jasmine with bright citrus top notes, aldehydes for a unique presence and vanilla for a warm trail. The House sets its warm, ambery trail apart from the woody Eau de Toilette.
- N°5 L’Eau Eau de Toilette: Chanel presents it as the N°5 of today, a vibrant abstract floral with freshness at its core, reinvented by Olivier Polge: lemon, mandarin and orange with aldehydes, then rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang, over vetiver, cedar and white musks. It is an Eau de Toilette like N°5 Eau de Toilette, but with a different composition.
- N°5 Eau Première: Chanel describes it as a floral, luminous and airy interpretation of N°5, in which Jacques Polge reinterpreted the composition: ylang-ylang from the Comoros with May rose, jasmine and aldehydes, and a trail of vanilla and musky notes. It is an Eau de Parfum like N°5 Eau de Parfum, but with a different composition.
Why is 100 ml not the same price for every version?
Each version is a separate product with its own concentration, composition and price, and even the sizes differ: the Eau de Parfum comes in 50, 100 and 200 ml, the Eau de Toilette in 75 and 150 ml only, so the two cannot be compared at 100 ml. The Eau de Parfum is more concentrated than the Eau de Toilette, meaning it contains a higher proportion of perfume essence. The price per ml falls as the size grows: for the Eau de Parfum the price per ml is about KWD 1.073 in 50 ml and about KWD 0.536 in 200 ml, and for the Eau de Toilette about KWD 0.819 in 75 ml and about KWD 0.547 in 150 ml. N°5 L’Eau and Eau Première come in 50 and 100 ml, at KWD 52.300 and KWD 69.200 each.

Why can one version smell different from another?
First, the concentration: the Eau de Parfum is not the Eau de Toilette. Second, Chanel lists different notes for each: rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and aldehydes over sandalwood and vetiver in the Eau de Toilette, and May rose and jasmine with bright citrus and a vanilla trail in the Eau de Parfum, describing the first as woody and the second as having a warm, ambery trail. Third, N°5 L’Eau and Eau Première have their own compositions: L’Eau brings lemon, mandarin and orange over cedar and white musks, and Eau Première is a luminous take with ylang-ylang, vanilla and musky notes. So two perfumes can carry the N°5 name and the same concentration, such as N°5 Eau de Toilette and N°5 L’Eau, and still smell different.
How to tell which version you have
The box and bottle carry the N°5 name with the version or concentration: EAU DE TOILETTE, EAU DE PARFUM, L’EAU or EAU PREMIÈRE. Chanel says the Eau de Toilette bottle is inspired by the 1924 shape, and that N°5 L’Eau comes in a crystal-clear glass bottle inside a second box.
